Digital asset management* - workflow for graphics, images, video, and more.

Digital Asset Management is a form of content management for effectively ingesting, annotating, cataloguing, storing, retrieving and distributing digital assets - digital assets that may be defined in three ways: as textual content, images and multimedia.

SeeFile

SeeFile4 is collaboration DAM software - replaces FTP and email attachments as the easy way to view, share and review media assets over a network. Display what's on your hard drive as either a thumbnail or a preview using an elegant browser interface with lightboxes and slideshows - no client software needed.

Canto Cumulus

Canto Cumulus is a powerful digital asset management system for all organisations where effective workflow management and rich media asset control is paramount. Cumulus simplifies the creation, control and deployment of digital asset management solutions for users, administrators and system integrators.

It allows any organisation from small workgroups to large enterprises to collaborate and manage all of a company's digital assets making Microsoft SharePoint products and technologies an invaluable collaboration platform.

Pound Hill MetaGrove suite

MetaGrove adds a powerful new dimension to file storage, retrieval, and automated network publishing in digital asset and content management systems with its comprehensive toolkit for XMP metadata.

* DAM vs Document Management
DAM systems may have the following in common with general document management systems:

  • repository - a database for version control, categorisation, upload, and download
  • metadata - ability to index the database using relevant metadata
  • search engine - simple and advanced search techniques
  • access and rights - user permissions and tracking
  • workflow or collaboration engine.

What typifies a good DAM system as distinct from any old document management system are the following:

  • ability to handle large files
  • capacity for reuse via on the fly requests for resizing, tranformations, conversions
  • workflow integration with tools such as Photoshop, InDesign
  • compound document indexing eg PDF pages, layouts and documents with embedded graphics
  • mapping of embedded metadata such as IPTC/XMP, Dublin Core etc
  • watermarking of assets and more.

For more information see Wikipedia's entries under Digital Asset Management (DAM) and related entries under Content Management (CMS) etc. For some useful definitions, see Step Two Design's Definition of information management terms.
